Abstract:
Nick Howarth and Mitchell Hewes will present an overview of industrial and nuclear cyber security risks, relating these to the recent publicized international incidents, followed by a summary of recent developments in international support for nuclear cyber security.
Nick Howarth
Nick Howarth leads the operational technology (OT) team in Nuclear Operations at ANSTO. The operational technology team is responsible for the system engineering and cyber security of the OPAL research reactor’s digital control systems and related facilities. Nick and the OT team contributes to the continued safe, secure and reliable operation of OPAL by insuring its OT assets are engineered, maintained and secured to international best practices and standards. Nick has a Bachelor’s degree in Technology from Western Sydney University, is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and is currently studying a Master of Business and Technology at UTS.
Mitchell Hewes
Mitchell is the Vice President of the AusYGN working in the industry as a Computer Security Advisor for ANSTO where he helps coordinate the computer security programme managing the organisations nuclear science, engineering, and medical production facilities. He joined ANSTO in 2011 shortly before obtaining his degree in Computer Science (Digital Systems Security) from the University of Wollongong.
Mitchell is passionate about advancing global nuclear security alongside scientific innovation. He has worked directly with the International Atomic Energy Agency to develop guidance, training courses, and research projects to promote international capability development in the Computer Security of Instrumentation and Control Systems used within Nuclear Facilities.
