Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament
The Report of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND) Eliminating Nuclear Threats - A Practical Agenda for Global Policy Makers was issued in December 2009. The Commission was chaired by Gareth Evans (Australia) and Yoriko Kawaguchi (Japan). The report provides an in depth discussion of issues relating to nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and develops a set of realistic action plans. The report is a available online at www.icnnd.org and ANA members can request a hard copy by email to icnnd@dfat.gov.au
ANA Award 2009
The ANA Award for 2009 was presented to Mr Robert Fry at the ANA Annual Lunch on Friday 27 November 2009. The Award was made for Outstanding contributions to health physics and radiation protection in the AAEC, as Supervising Scientist for the Alligator Rivers Region of the NT, and to radiation protection and public health within the IAEA and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency
Agreement with Atomic Energy Society of Japan
The ANA has renewed its agreement for cooperation with the Atomic Energy Society of Japan (AESJ) to develop friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two societies and promote the development of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes.
Senate Inquiry into the Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Bill 2010
ANA made a submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee for the inquiry into the the Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Bill 2010. The ANA recommended that Parliament pass the Bill as a practical next step in the already protracted process of finding a suitable and acceptable site for this important waste management facility. The ANA submission is submission No 129 on the Inquiry web site .
ANA2009 Conference
The ANA2009 Conference was held in Sydney on 2 Oct 2009 (Program). The ANA is very grateful to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) for its sponsorship of the conference, the speakers for their informative and well prepared presentations and the audience for its interest and involvement all of whom made for a very successful conference. ANA2009 was the eighth in the series of biennial national conferences hosted by ANA since 1995.
Senate Select Committee on Fuel and Energy
The ANA made a submission to the Senate Select Committee on 21 July 2009. The submission makes the case that nuclear power is a proven, economic and mature technology for the generation of base-load electricity with minimal emission of greenhouse gases and that having nuclear power in Australia would increase energy security and help Australia meet its greenhouse gas emission targets.
The ANA was invited to attend the public hearing of the Committee on Thursday 12 Nov 2009. Dr John Harries (ANA President), Dr Clarence Hardy (ANA Secretary) and Dr Don Higson (ANA Committee Member) appeared as witnesses and answered questions from members of the Committee.
